For those that think “truthers” are crazy, the number one reason that 9/11 truth has grown is because the explanation given by he Commission Report for the collapse of the Twin Towers is in conflict with the verifiable physical and video evidence. A gravity driven collapse of the two buildings caused by the planes crashes and resulting fires is impossible due to the symmetrical nature of the collapse in less than 30 seconds. The picture below is the steel core which would have to have failed in some way leading to a situation where the mass would induce a pancake style collapse. What the “debunking” crowd doesn’t seem to understand is that all these would have to fail almost simultaneously all the way down to produce the collapse seen on video. For the Twin Towers to collapse in the time frame seen and to collapse straight down without falling to one side, the support system beneath the collapse wave had to be removed in some way, otherwise the floors below would have provided more resistance to the collapse which would have been visible on video.

Below are two things that cannot be explained by the gravity driven collapse caused by airplane crashes and resulting fires. One is an example of the heat-twisted steel found in the rubble of the Twin Towers, caused by temperatures which could not be generated in a fire fed by jet fuel. The other is the “Ground Zero meteorite”, a fused mass of metal and concrete. How could either one of those be caused by a plane and jet fuel?

Let’s hear experienced ironworkers, architects, engineers, firefighters, and professionals who saw the destruction firsthand, as they talk about the mangled steel, extreme temperatures, and unbelievable pulverization of the debris.

Many of the beams were twisted and distorted as though made of rubber or wax. Some beams were over 6 [inches] thick and bent like pretzels. Structural engineers, who are experts in steel structures that have suffered earthquakes and explosions claimed to have seen nothing like this before and could not imagine the kind of pressure and heat required to do this kind of damage.

I found it hard to believe that it bent because the size of it and how there’s no cracks in the iron. It’s bent without almost a single crack in it. It takes thousands [?] degrees to bend steel like this.

This documentary in particular draws attention to the incredible state into which building materials were contorted. The film features a unique look at one of the “meteorites” — a “fused element of steel, molten steel and concrete and all these things fused by the heat into one single element.” (Voorsanger, Ibid. The only plausible explanation that fits all of the events is a controlled demolition involving nano-thermite (ate).

Tommy’s remains were never found. The only items that were recovered from the ashes of Ground Zero were his melted gun and mangled badge. He was just 26 years old and was married only 3 months.

Exploring 9/11 truth websites will yield all kinds of things, and seemingly there is a debunker for every truther and on both sides, many of them pass disinformation back and forth between each other.

The 9/11 Commission report is scant on forensic details of the collapse, but the list below pretty much rules out the impossible claims.

The total destructions of the two towers were almost identical. The most apparent difference is that the top of the South Tower tipped for a few seconds before falling, whereas the top of the North Tower telescoped straight down from the start. Here are some of the principal characteristics of the destructions, based on study of the surviving evidence. The cores were obliterated. There is no gravity collapse scenario that can account for the complete leveling of the massive columns of the towers’ cores. The perimeter walls were shredded. No gravity collapse scenario can account for the ripping apart of the three-column by three-floor prefabricated column and spandrel plate units along their welds. Nearly all the concrete was pulverized in the air, so finely that it blanketed parts of Lower Manhattan with inches of dust. In a gravity collapse, there would not have been enough energy to pulverize the concrete until it hit the ground, if then. The towers exploded into immense clouds of dust, which were several times the original volumes of the buildings by the time their disintegration reached the ground. Parts of the towers were thrown 500 feet laterally. The downward forces of a gravity collapse cannot account for the energetic lateral ejection of pieces. Explosive events were visible before many floors had collapsed. Since overpressures are the only possible explanations for the explosive dust plumes emerging from the buildings, the top would have to be falling to produce them in a gravity collapse. But in the South Tower collapse, energetic dust ejections are first seen while the top is only slightly tipping, not falling.
The towers’ tops mushroomed into thick dust clouds much larger than the original volumes of the buildings. Without the addition of large sources of pressure beyond the collapse itself, the falling building and its debris should have occupied about the same volume as the intact building.
Explosive ejections of dust, known as squibs, occurred well below the mushrooming region in both of the tower collapses. A gravitational collapse explanation would account for these as dust from floors pancaking well down into the tower’s intact region. But if the floors — the only major non-steel building component — were falling well below the mushrooming cloud above, what was the source of the dense powder in the cloud?
The halting of rotation of the South Tower’s top as it began its fall can only be explained by its breakup.

The tops fell at near the rate of free fall. The rates of fall indicate that nearly all resistance to the downward acceleration of the tops had been eliminated ahead of them. The forms of resistance, had the collapses been gravity-driven, would include: the destruction of the structural integrity of each story; the pulverization of the concrete in the floor slabs of each story, and other non-metallic objects; and the acceleration of the remains of each story encountered either outward or downward. There would have to be enough energy to overcome all of these forms of resistance and do it rapidly enough to keep up with the near free-fall acceleration of the top.

With that said, the official theory of a gravity collapse meets these problems below.

Defenders of the gravity collapse theory consistently invoke the explanation that the ejections of dust are caused by pancaking floors squeezing out air and dust. The Popular Mechanics article attacking 9/11 Truth contains the following passage.

Like all office buildings, the WTC towers contained a huge volume of air. As they pancaked, all that air–along with the concrete and other debris pulverized by the force of the collapse–was ejected with enormous energy. “When you have a significant portion of a floor collapsing, it’s going to shoot air and concrete dust out the window,” NIST lead investigator Shyam Sunder tells PM. Those clouds of dust may create the impression of a controlled demolition, Sunder adds, “but it is the floor pancaking that leads to that perception.”

NIST’s final Report on the Twin Towers mentions the piston theory to attempt to explain away the ejections:

The falling mass of the building compressed the air ahead of it, much like the action of a piston, forcing material, such as smoke and debris, out the windows as seen in several videos.

There are several problems with this explanation, which we designate the piston theory.

  • The squibs contain thick dust of a light color, apparently from crushed concrete and gypsum. But these materials would not have been crushed until the pancaking floors above impacted the floor emitting the squib. Thus the dust would not be produced until the air was already squeezed out, so there was no source of the dust for the squib.
  • The squibs emerge from the facade 10 to 20 floors below the exploding rubble cloud inside of which the tower is disintegrating. The thick clouds appear to contain the pulverized concrete of the floor slabs, which was the only concrete component of the tower.
    But the piston theory requires that the floors have already pancaked down to the level of the squib, making them unavailable for the production of the concrete dust more than 10 floors above.
  • The piston theory requires a rather orderly pancaking of the floor diaphragms within the intact sleeve of the perimeter wall. Such a process should have left a stack of floor diaphragms at the tower’s base at the end of the collapse.
    But there was no such stack. In fact, it is difficult to find recognizable pieces of floor slabs of any size in Ground Zero photographs.
  • The North Tower exhibits three distinct sets of squibs at different elevations of the building. Each set is visible as two distinct squibs on the same floor, one emerging from about the horizontal center of each of the tower’s two visible faces. This pattern is is far too focused and symmetric to be explained by the piston theory, which would produce similar pressures across each floor and over successive floors.
  • The pancaking of floors within the perimeter wall would have created underpressures in the region above the top pancaking floor. But we seen no evidence of dust being sucked back into the tower.

The dominant energy source assumed to be in play during the leveling of each of the Twin Towers was the gravitational energy due to their elevated mass. The energy sinks included the thorough pulverization of each tower’s concrete, the vaporization of water, and the heating of air and suspended concrete dust in the ensuing dust cloud.

Conclusion

The amount of energy required to expand the North Tower’s dust cloud was many times the entire potential energy of the tower’s elevated mass due to gravity.
The over-tenfold disparity between the most conservative estimate and the gravitational energy is not easily dismissed as reflecting uncertainties in quantitative assessments.

The official explanation that the Twin Tower collapses were gravity-driven events appears insufficient to account for the documented energy flows.

Debunkers commonly point to the Popular Mechanics article for evidence that the Commission report is fully accurate. Below are a few claims they make which are designed to disprove the conspiracy theories. What should be noticeable is that the PM claims may disprove something untrue, but the PM claim is then contradicted by something we know to be true.

Widespread Damage
Claim: The first hijacked plane crashed through the 94th to the 98th floors of the World Trade Center’s 110-story North Tower; the second jet slammed into the 78th to the 84th floors of the 110-story South Tower. The impact and ensuing fires disrupted elevator service in both buildings. Plus, the lobbies of both buildings were visibly damaged before the towers collapsed. “There is NO WAY the impact of the jet caused such widespread damage 80 stories below,” claims a posting on the San Diego Independent Media Center Web site (sandiego.indymedia.org). “It is OBVIOUS and irrefutable that OTHER EXPLOSIVES (… such as concussion bombs) HAD ALREADY BEEN DETONATED in the lower levels of tower one at the same time as the plane crash.”

FACT: Following up on a May 2002 preliminary report by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), a major study will be released in spring 2005 by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), a branch of the U.S. Department of Commerce. NIST shared its initial findings with PM and made its lead researcher available to our team of reporters.

The NIST investigation revealed that plane debris sliced through the utility shafts at the North Tower’s core, creating a conduit for burning jet fuel—and fiery destruction throughout the building. “It’s very hard to document where the fuel went,” says Forman Williams, a NIST adviser and a combustion expert, “but if it’s atomized and combustible and gets to an ignition source, it’ll go off.”

Burning fuel traveling down the elevator shafts would have disrupted the elevator systems and caused extensive damage to the lobbies. NIST heard first-person testimony that “some elevators slammed right down” to the ground floor. “The doors cracked open on the lobby floor and flames came out and people died,” says James Quintiere, an engineering professor at the University of Maryland and a NIST adviser. A similar observation was made in the French documentary “9/11,” by Jules and Gedeon Naudet. As Jules Naudet entered the North Tower lobby, minutes after the first aircraft struck, he saw victims on fire, a scene he found too horrific to film.

This claim of the fireballs traveling 80 floors to the lobby is farcical, there was not enough air in the elevator shafts as they were virtually sealed for efficiency. Even with unrestricted airflow, there could not have been enough fuel and fire fed down the elevator shaft to cause the damage done to the lobby. Reports of elevators crashing to the ground could have played a factor, but video footage from the Naudet documentary referenced above shows that large marble panels were blown off of the walls, windows were broken and other concussive damage indicative of explosion damage. The explosion claims are corroborated though by eyewitnesses in the the basement levels.

There are only 2 possibilities to explain the twin towers both collapsing. The first is the official 9/11 Commission report which basically asserts the buildings each had enough steel support cut by the plane damage that the added stress of jet fuel fire caused both towers to critically fail.
The physical evidence contradicts that account in many ways, but debunkers commonly support this theory. The only other possibility is that the buildings fell as a result of explosives and thermitic material causing the building to lose support and implode on itself.

A response to some questions from the official NIST report is damning evidence that the jets didn’t bring down the buildings. NIST itself could not fully explain all phenomena witnessed in a coherent fashion.

In an amazing about-face, the National Institute for Standards and Technology (NIST) has implicitly admitted that its 10,000-page report on the destruction of the Twin Towers is a fraud, and that the buildings were destroyed by controlled demolition.

In its recent reply to family members Bill Doyle and Bob McIlvaine, scientists Steven Jones and Kevin Ryan, architect Richard Gage and the group Scholars for 9/11 Truth and Justice, NIST states: “We are unable to provide a full explanation of the total collapse.”

Thus NIST euphemistically admits that its 10,000-page report on the Towers does not even pretend to provide any explanation whatsoever for the Towers’ total collapse–and that indeed no such explanation is possible without invoking the politically-incorrect idea of controlled demolition.

NIST’S 10,000-page report purports to explain what it calls “collapse initiation” — the loss of several floors’ vertical support. In order to dream up this preposterous scenario, NIST had to ignore its own tests that showed that virtually none of the steel got hotter than 500 degrees f. It had to claim that somehow the planes took out many core columns, despite the fact that only a direct hit by an engine would have been likely to do so, and that the chances of this happening even once are fairly low. It had to preposterously allege that the plane that nicked the corner of the South Tower took out more core columns than the one that hit the North Tower almost dead center. It had to tweak all the parameters till they screamed bloody murder and say that the steel was far weaker than it actually was, the fire was far hotter than it actually was, the sagging was far greater than it actually was, and so on. And so NIST hallucinated a computer-generated fantasy scenario for “collapse initiation”–the failure of a few floors.

But how do you get from the failure of a few floors to total collapse at free-fall speed of the entire structure? The short answer: You don’t. Anyone with the slightest grasp of the laws of physics understands that even if all of the vertical supports on a few floors somehow failed catastrophically at exactly the same moment–a virtually impossible event, but one necessary to explain why the Towers would come straight down rather than toppling sideways–the top part of the building could not fall THROUGH the still-intact, highly robust lower part of the building, straight through the path of most resistance, just as fast as it would have fallen through thin air.

This is a stunning development and only leaves the possibility that something had to remove the mass of steel structure for the buildings to fall at the speed and pattern they did. While the buildings did not fall at complete free fall speed, by the time the collapse waves were hitting the ground, the debris wave was almost at free fall speed potential. This dictates that something had to remove mass from beneath. The only things that could do that are explosives or a higher tech weapon, which is highly unlikely. There is still the micronuclear charges theory discussed in #14, but the bulk of the evidence points to controlled demolition. The evidence of nano-thermitic material in the WTC dust is conclusive proof that explosive materials were present in large quantities in the Twin Towers.

The cover-up was a priority.

Steel was the structural material of the buildings. As such it was the most important evidence to preserve in order to puzzle out how the structures held up to the impacts and fires, but then disintegrated into rubble. Since no steel-framed buildings had ever collapsed due to fires, the steel should have been subjected to detailed analysis. So what did the authorities do with this key evidence of the vast crime and unprecedented engineering failure? They recycled it!
Some 185,101 tons of structural steel have been hauled away from Ground Zero. Most of the steel has been recycled as per the city’s decision to swiftly send the wreckage to salvage yards in New Jersey. The city’s hasty move has outraged many victims’ families who believe the steel should have been examined more thoroughly. Last month, fire experts told Congress that about 80% of the steel was scrapped without being examined because investigators did not have the authority to preserve the wreckage. 1

The bulk of the steel was apparently shipped to China and India. The Chinese firm Baosteel purchased 50,000 tons at a rate of $120 per ton, compared to an average price of $160 paid by local mills in the previous year. 2

Mayor Bloomberg, a former engineering major, was not concerned about the destruction of the evidence:
If you want to take a look at the construction methods and the design, that’s in this day and age what computers do. Just looking at a piece of metal generally doesn’t tell you anything. 3

The pace of the steel’s removal was very rapid, even in the first weeks after the attack. By September 29, 130,000 tons of debris — most of it apparently steel — had been removed. 4

During the official investigation controlled by FEMA, one hundred fifty pieces of steel were saved for future study. 5 One hundred fifty pieces out of hundreds of thousands of pieces! Moreover it is not clear who made the decision to save these particular pieces. It is clear that the volunteer investigators were doing their work at the Fresh Kills dump, not at Ground Zero, so whatever steel they had access to was first picked over by the people running the cleanup operation.
Highly Sensitive Garbage

Given that the people in charge considered the steel garbage, useless to any investigation in this age of computer simulations, they certainly took pains to make sure it didn’t end up anywhere other than a smelting furnace. They installed GPS locater devices on each of the trucks that was carrying loads away from Ground Zero, at a cost of $1000 each. The securitysolutions.com website has an article on the tracking system with this passage.
Ninety-nine percent of the drivers were extremely driven to do their jobs. But there were big concerns, because the loads consisted of highly sensitive material. One driver, for example, took an extended lunch break of an hour and a half. There was nothing criminal about that, but he was dismissed. 6
Shielding Investigators From the Evidence

According to FEMA, more than 350,000 tons of steel were extracted from Ground Zero and barged or trucked to salvage yards where it was cut up for recycling. Four salvage yards were contracted to process the steel.

FEMA’s BPAT, who wrote the WTC Building Performance Study, were not given access to Ground Zero. Apparently, they were not even allowed to collect steel samples from the salvage yards. According to Appendix D of the Study:
Collection and storage of steel members from the WTC site was not part of the BPS Team efforts sponsored by FEMA and the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE).

The cover-up circumstances show someone felt the steel needed to be gotten rid of quickly. The steel was the only thing the initial cleanup focused on as it is the forensic smoking gun. They even had GPS units installed on the dump trucks at $1000 each. What was so important that the extensive security was needed? The steel was even sold at a discount just to get it recycled fast enough? Federal agencies were not allowed to examine most of the steel because they were obstructed.

The steel that was able to be examined showed curious signs of damage. FEMA’s Building Performance Assessment Team (BPAT) got a chance to examine some steel prior to it being recycled. What they found is evidence that points more towards controlled demolition than the alternative suggested. The only alternative explanation is that the damage occurred in the debris pile, but even as they say, the sulfur residue is not explained by that theory.

The results of the examination are striking. They reveal a phenomenon never before observed in building fires: eutectic reactions, which caused “intergranular melting capable of turning a solid steel girder into Swiss cheese.” The New York Times described this as “perhaps the deepest mystery uncovered in the investigation.”

A one-inch column has been reduced to half-inch thickness. Its edges–which are curled like a paper scroll–have been thinned to almost razor sharpness.
Gaping holes–some larger than a silver dollar–let light shine through a formerly solid steel flange.
This Swiss cheese appearance shocked all of the fire-wise professors, who expected to see distortion and bending–but not holes.

FEMA’s investigators inferred that a “liquid eutectic mixture containing primarily iron, oxygen, and sulfur” formed during a “hot corrosion attack on the steel.” The eutectic mixture (having the elements in such proportion as to have the lowest possible melting point) penetrated the steel down grain boundaries, making it “susceptible to erosion.” Following are excerpts from Appendix C, Limited Metallurgical Examination.

Evidence of a severe high temperature corrosion attack on the steel, including oxidation and sulfidation with subsequent intergranular melting, was readily visible in the near-surface microstructure. A liquid eutectic mixture containing primarily iron, oxygen, and sulfur formed during this hot corrosion attack on the steel.

The unusual thinning of the member is most likely due to an attack of the steel by grain boundary penetration of sulfur forming sulfides that contain both iron and copper.

The severe corrosion and subsequent erosion of Samples 1 and 2 are a very unusual event. No clear explanation for the source of the sulfur has been identified. The rate of corrosion is also unknown. It is possible that this is the result of long-term heating in the ground following the collapse of the buildings. It is also possible that the phenomenon started prior to collapse and accelerated the weakening of the steel structure. A detailed study into the mechanisms of this phenomenon is needed to determine what risk, if any, is presented to existing steel structures exposed to severe and long-burning fires.

Thermite Use

The “deep mystery” of the melted steel may be yielding its secrets to investigators not beholden to the federal government. Professor Steven Jones has pointed out that the severe corrosion, intergranular melting, and abundance of sulfur are consistent with the theory of thermite arson.

In appendix C of the FEMA WTC Building Performance Study, the conclusion of the investigators is listed under Suggestions for Future Research

It’s understandable why there was urgency felt to clean up the steel first, that’s the evidence of the criminality.
The FEMA report couldn’t prove where the sulfur residue came from, but Prof. Jones’ suggestion that thermate could have been used as opposed to thermite is definitely possible, and Jones says, may even be preferable to thermite. The New York Times initially reported on the “high temperature sulfidation” which Jones says is virtually only explained by the presence of thermate. Thermate may have been preferable as the sulfur would make the explosive, corrosive nature more effective.
There are many combinations of nano-thermite/ate, and while it’s unclear exactly which compound was used, the evidence of molten metal can only be explained by explosives. Debunkers will say that it’s not clear what kind of metal it is, but any kind of metal is proof that the temperatures in the debris were too high to match the official theory.

Aluminothermic reactions are exothermic chemical reactions in which aluminum is oxidized while an oxide of another metal is reduced. Although high temperatures are required to initiate such reactions, they are easily self-sustaining once started due to the heat they generate. The most common example of an aluminothermic reaction is thermite, in which powdered aluminum reacts with an iron oxide. Because aluminum has a greater affinity for oxygen than iron, oxygen is transferred from the iron oxide to the aluminum, releasing a great deal of energy and leaving behind molten iron and aluminum oxide.

Professor Steven Jones has noted that a number of features evident both before and after the falls of the Towers fit the theory that thermite was used.

Thermite Variants

Basic thermite preparations can be modified and augmented in various ways to change their properties. The fineness of the aluminum powder determines the speed of the reaction. The use of ultra-fine aluminum powder gives the reaction an explosive quality, resulting in ‘super-thermites’. The addition of sulfur in preparations called thermates enhances the ability of the reaction to cut through steel.

Findings reported in Appendix C of FEMA’s World Trade Center Building Performance Study seem to fit the thermite theory remarkably well.

What could have done that to the steel?

Analysis of the steel feeds the nanothermite evidence specifically because of the intergranular melting, which would allow it to melt very quickly. The following video was in #19 showing the effectiveness of nanothermite, especially when painted on the steel, mimics the damage pattern studied in the WTC samples. Notice the beam melts fast, begins to curl up and shows the “Swiss cheese” effect described.

The versatility of nanothermitic molecules allows it to be applied numerous ways, specifically spraying would provide a good legitimate cover to someone witnessing that (painting, fireproofing, etc.).

Basic thermite preparations can be modified and augmented in various ways to change their properties. The fineness of the aluminum powder determines the speed of the reaction. The use of ultra-fine aluminum powder gives the reaction an explosive quality, resulting in ‘super-thermites’. The addition of sulfur in preparations called thermates enhances the ability of the reaction to cut through steel.

The purpose of using nanothermite is the high incendiary nature of the compound would be needed to quickly melt steel in the right locations, of course the whole beam doesn’t have to melt. There were multiple reports of molten metal before and after the tower collapse as evidenced by the videos below.

The previous video features sworn testimony, eyewitness accounts, video and scientific data all confirming that there was molten metal. The video also talks about the thermite study and the volume of thermite necessary. The study found that about 10 tons of the nanothermitic material had to be present in the towers to produce the ratio of thermite-to-dust discovered.

As #19 talked about, thermite by itself couldn’t have brought down the towers by itself, an explosive element was needed to remove the remaining support, as thermite derivatives are high incendiaries. The thermitic compound was used to cut the steel at the right points and the explosives were detonated as part of the collapsing blast wave.

Most of the eyewitness accounts report explosions or what sounded and felt like bombs. The videos below confirm the explosions and that there were multiple explosions in the basement of the North Tower, possibly one in the South Tower basement.

Tower Collapses

The collapse itself is indicative of something other than the plane bringing the building down from Chapter 1 of the FEMA report.
The towers do not pancake collapse, and for evidence of this, look at the building structure. The great thing about WTC office space was the lack of vertical beams constraining your floor space, as the floors wrap around the building core.

This is the physical evidence that doesn’t match the videos. If the building pancaked, the floors would collapse a lot slower and it stands to reason that at least a piece of the tower core would be still standing. The collapse of both towers would have been much slower also, the collapse videos show a continuous flow to the bottom. When the architects and engineers say the collapse defies physics given the official explanation, this is one thing they’re referring to. The towers did not collapse at full free fall speed, but well timed detonation moved enough mass for the towers to fall quickly in a continuous flow. As you watch the videos, you will also notice the debris blowouts, look a few floors below the detonation wave.

An analysis of impeded collapse





The sudden collapse of each tower sent out air pressure waves that spread dust clouds of building materials in all directions for many blocks. The density and pressure of the dust clouds were strong enough to carry light debris and lift or move small vehicles and break windows in adjacent buildings for several blocks around the WTC site.

This is consistent with a pyroclastic dust and explosion aftermath. Debris from the towers was thrown hundreds of feet from the building and the smoke cloud mushroomed. “It occurs in only two situations that we know of naturally, uh, 1 is in volcanic eruptions where a large amount of material is suddenly exploded into the air and basically forms small particles, the second is turbidity currents thereby creating another . large amounts of a dense material that is suspended very quickly, that fluid can achieve significant. The problem with creating this sort of slurry of fine particles. There really is no method that’s being proposed. Early in the collapse we see this thick clouds ejected at high speed . they’re clearly dense because they flow downwards and become part of this large overall pyroclastic flow. what we’re basically being told is that the concrete sort of jumped up into midair, exploded itself and then was ejected as the floors came together. Not a very plausible mechanism but I have yet to hear of anything else proposed to explain it.”

The range of possibilities are limited as far as possibilities that match all the evidence. The official story is a farce and not even NIST stands behind it. The no plane and directed energy weapon theories are not plausible either. The only possibility is some form of nanothermite charges supplemented by separate high explosives, which would yield the temperature for molten metal and damage pattern.
