Michael Finley’s ‘Do-It-Yourself’ 30 Day Detoxification Program
| WTF News |
Michael D. Finley, CNHP, JD, author of The Tesla Conspiracy
Many health problems are caused by toxins taken into the body through our water, foods, air, skin, personal care products, and cleaning products. In addition to removing these toxins from daily use, we can detoxify our bodies by making key changes in our diet and lifestyle that will help our bodies to expel the toxins. Many of these changes will also balance the body’s pH, which can help prevent many major health problems or help the body recover therefrom. Here is a thirty day plan to detoxify your body and environment.
30 Day Detoxification Plan:
Day 1: Switch to toothpaste without fluoride
Day 2: Start a habit of drinking the same number of ounces of clean water as half the number of pounds in your body weight daily
Day 3: Start eating an increasing number of fresh raw vegetables and fruits until they make up about 80% of your diet
Day 4: Switch to using natural, unrefined salt instead of using refined white salt
Day 5: Switch to using healthy fats/oils and eliminate unhealthy oils
Day 6: Start drinking real, natural lemonade, also known as the master cleanse, every day for one week, then at least once per week after that
Day 7: Start getting regular aerobic exercise, which is the only way your lymph system works to cleanse toxins from your body
Day 8: Switch to natural, healthy sugars or natural zero calorie sweeteners
Day 9: Start reading food and personal care product labels and stop buying anything with artificial ingredients or anything you can’t pronounce
Day 10: Switch to healthy drinks instead of sodas, sports drinks, coffee, black tea, and energy drinks
Day 11: Start getting enough sleep
Day 12: Start taking 15 to 20 minute “sun breaks” daily
Day 13: Begin oil pulling to remove toxins each morning
Day 14: Begin a habit of drinking at least one green smoothie per day
Day 15: If you’re still buying prepared or processed foods, use an app to avoid GMO’s
Day 16: Switch to natural cleaning products in your home
Day 17: Switch to using live houseplants, good air filters, and essential oils instead of chemical air fresheners
Day 18: Learn to listen to your body’s communications instead of suppressing them with unnecessary drugs
Day 19: If you eat cooked foods, make more of them baked, roasted, or sautéed and less of them batter fried or deep fried
Day 20: Switch to healthier carbs and starches
Day 21: If you eat meat, switch to meats that don’t contain nitrites or nitrates
Day 22: Learn how to digest your food better with better chewing, better food selection, and digestive support
Day 23A: Evaluate and reduce or eliminate toxic relationships and stressful situations from your life
Day 23B: Learn to trust your creator
Day 24: Reduce your uses of and exposure to petroleum plastics and products
Day 25: Start consuming healthy, delicious homemade chocolate
Day 26: Reduce your exposure to aluminum in your cookware and antiperspirant
Day 27: Reduce your exposure to mercury, including thimerosal (medical mercury)
Day 28: Switch to using natural pest killers or pest repellents
Day 29: Use probiotic products and rBST-free or raw dairy products if you consume dairy
Day 30: If you eat meat, switch to naturally fed, free range meats instead of hormone-infused, genetically modified, antibiotic-filled, inhumanely raised meats
Day 1: Switch to toothpaste without fluoride. This dangerous toxin is literally the main ingredient in nerve gas and rat poison. There has never been proof that it prevents cavities and it has been linked by multiple studies to cancer and the yellowing or even browning of teeth. Make your own toothpaste or buy natural toothpaste without fluoride and with as few chemicals in it as possible. One homemade toothpaste recipe is 3 tablespoons baking soda, 3 tablespoons organic coconut oil, 1/8 teaspoon peppermint extract, 1/8 teaspoon Himalayan pink salt, and if you like your toothpaste to taste sweet, use about 6 to 8 servings of pure stevia extract with no extra ingredients. Do not use Truvia, which is laboratory synthesized and contains erythritol. This step alone will make an enormous difference in your body’s detoxification and will help detoxify and decalcify your pineal gland, which controls your imagination, your ability to dream, and your sense of intuition, among other things. Back to Days List
Day 2: Start a habit of drinking the same number of ounces of clean water as half the number of pounds in your body weight daily. If you weigh 180 pounds, you should drink 90 ounces of water per day. The cleanest water is probably steam distilled, but a variety of filtered waters can be clean. It should not contain fluoride and should have as few chemicals as possible. Many bottled waters have Bisphenol A (BPA) from the container, as well as fluoride, chlorine, aluminum, and other harmful chemicals. If you are using a filtration system, it should be something that removes such chemicals.
A stainless steel bottle or real glass will be the least likely to add aluminum or BPA to your water. If you don’t like the taste of water, squeeze some fresh juice from your favorite citrus fruit into it, like a lemon, lime, or orange. Water is the body’s most important tool for washing away toxins and infections. Most Americans are seriously dehydrated and don’t realize it because they drink many different substances that contain toxins and therefore cause the body to waste the fluid consumed in an effort to wash away the toxins contained in their drinks. Back to Days List
Day 3: Start eating an increasing number of fresh raw vegetables and fruits until they make up about 80% of your diet. This can be whatever vegetables and fruits you will eat raw. Spinach, tomatoes, carrots, onions, melons, squash, apples, oranges, pears, avocados, mangos, lettuce, apricots, peaches, kale, broccoli, cauliflower, cucumbers, beets, papaya, guava, grapes, the list of delicious raw vegetables and fruits is too long to write here. Just visit a local produce market and look around for things that sound delicious to you. Organic is definitely preferable, but you have to do what you can. GMO’s (genetically modified organisms or genetically engineered crops) are definitely not what you want.
Even ignoring the debate about transgenic DNA, rogue proteins, and cancer, most GMO’s are engineered to be able to tolerate high levels of herbicides and pesticides, so they usually contain large amounts of glyphosate and other toxic chemicals. One helpful way to tell the difference is to check the produce sticker for the item number. A five digit number starting with a 9 is supposed to be organically grown. If it starts with an 8, it’s a GMO item and you should avoid it. A four digit number (usually starting with a 3, 4, or 5) usually means that it was conventionally grown and may have been treated with chemical pesticides and grown with chemical fertilizers (although it could also be GMO). If it’s something that will be peeled, like an orange or banana, the pesticide might not be as harmful, but thin skinned produce like apples or grapes may have absorbed the pesticide into the fruit or vegetable. Growing your own vegetables is an excellent idea, because you will control the type of fertilizer and avoid chemical pesticides.
An excellent way to get a variety of fresh vegetables and fruit in your diet is to make your own raw salsa and use a natural salt (see day 4) instead of refined salt, then use sliced vegetables like bell peppers, cucumbers, celery, or something else you like instead of chips. Salsa is extremely easy to make. Try looking up recipes or experimenting with tomatoes or tomatillos, your favorite onions (green, red, white, sweet, yellow, brown, etc.- take your pick, but my favorites are green or red onions or both), cilantro, your favorite peppers, some fresh squeezed lime juice, and some unrefined salt. Remember that if you don’t like spicy salsa, there are less spicy peppers like bell peppers. My favorite is spicy salsa, so I’m more likely to use jalapenos or serranos.
Fruit smoothies are also fantastic and delicious and can be made with raw frozen fruit or regular fruit. Just put your favorite fruits in a blender, maybe some seasonings like cinnamon or fresh mint, and blend it. A juice fast can help detoxify the body very quickly, but a lot of people don’t feel ready for that. This simple change of increasing your raw fresh vegetables and fruit consumption will still help detoxify your body and consuming the produce raw will help ensure that your body is receiving necessary enzymes to digest your food and function properly. Back to Days List
Day 4: Switch to using natural, unrefined salt instead of using refined white salt. Buy a natural salt like Himalayan pink salt, Hawaiian black salt, Celtic salt, unrefined sea salt, or true salt and use that instead. These salts contain many essential minerals, with Himalayan pink salt containing the largest number of essential minerals. Refined white salt (including refined sea salt) has been stripped of these essential minerals and the body does not recognize them as food, so it uses up needed water and minerals to flush it from the system. When you use an unrefined salt that contains essential minerals, it helps your body to utilize water properly and helps balance your pH. Back to Days List
Day 5: Switch to using healthy fats/oils and eliminate unhealthy oils. This means using as much virgin coconut oil, virgin olive oil, sesame oil, peanut oil, hemp oil, flax oil, sunflower oil, or grapeseed oil as feels right to you and stop using canola (a.k.a. rapeseed) oil, hydrogenated vegetable oil, corn oil, soybean oil (usually GMO), and margarine.
Even natural butter (preferably unsalted to avoid refined salt) is healthier than margarine or hydrogenated vegetable oil. Avocados, squash seeds, pumpkin seeds, hemp seeds, chia seeds, sunflower seeds, cashews, and other nuts (prepared with unrefined salt or no salt and no sugars, fructose, corn syrup, or unhealthy oils) are good sources of healthy oils and fats that the body needs to feed the brain, make healthy skin, and function properly.
If you’re not getting enough healthy fats or oils, you’re more likely to crave carbs and get fat or stay fat. Getting enough of the right fats will decrease your cravings, help you lose weight, and help wash away fat soluble toxins that have been stored in your body’s fat. Back to Days List
Day 6: Start drinking real, natural lemonade, also known as the master cleanse, every day for one week, then at least once per week after that. Here’s a simple recipe: squeeze two fresh lemons into a 12 to 16 ounce glass, add 4 or 5 tablespoons of grade B maple syrup (a low glycemic natural sugar), a pinch of cayenne pepper, and fill the rest of the way with clean water (and ice if desired, though I prefer room temperature). If you can’t handle cayenne pepper, you can leave it out, but it’s best if you use a smaller pinch because it has a lot of positive effects on the body. Drinking one of these a day will help cleanse toxins from your system. The more you follow this program, the less often this will affect your bowel movements, but if your body needs serious detoxification, you may experience occasional diarrhea for a few days. Don’t worry, this won’t last and there was nothing in there that you wanted to keep anyway. Back to Days List
Day 7: Start getting regular aerobic exercise, which is the only way your lymph system works to cleanse toxins from your body. This exercise should be done at least 3 days per week, but preferably you would at least do some walking daily. You don’t have to become an aerobics expert or do the P90x program (though it might help if you can handle that level). Any exercise that gets your body moving and blood pumping for several minutes regularly is good.
Pick something that appeals to you and do it as often as you can: walking, bicycling, jogging, rollerblading, rollerskating, ice skating, skate boarding, swimming, dancing, Zoomba, Tae Bo, yoga, kickboxing, jumping jacks, treadmill, hiking, trail running, mountain climbing, surfing, skiing, martial arts, tai chi, trampoline, mini trampoline, elliptical machines, stationary bicycling or “spinning,” walking up and down stairs, soccer, baseball, softball, basketball, football, tennis, badminton, volleyball, squash, racquetball, playing tag, beach combing, scuba diving, snorkeling, kayaking, rowing, paddle boating, and any similar activity will get your blood flowing, your lungs pumping oxygen into your blood, and your lymph nodes cleansing toxins from your body. Back to Days List
Day 8: Switch to natural, healthy sugars or natural zero calorie sweeteners. You knew this step would be mentioned, and here it is. If you dreaded reading this, you probably have an addiction to a toxic sweetener like aspartame (a.k.a. Nutrasweet®) or refined white sugar. Aspartame is a fat soluble excitotoxin, which means that that it damages brain cells and your body tries to protect itself from it by wrapping it in fat and storing it. So much for it being a “diet” sweetener. This is why so many diet soda drinkers have trouble losing weight. Refined white sugar is probably the most popular drug in the world. It causes blood sugars to spike dramatically because the nutrition has been stripped away.
High fructose corn syrup is also very high glycemic and is considered by most natural health experts and nutritionists to be even worse than white sugar. Like refined salt, the body no longer recognizes it as food, so it wastes precious resources to flush it out or wraps it in fat and stores it. Worst of all, it is a cancer cell’s favorite food. While a regular cell may have about four sugar receptors, a cancer cell has more than ninety. A combination of processed food toxins, environmental toxins, and refined sugar means that cancer rates would increase significantly in the population. If you haven’t been reading health news reports, you’ve missed seeing that cancer rates have not only increased dramatically in recent years, but they are expected to rise even higher. Now is the time to learn to stop feeding the cancer.
The good news is that there are several low glycemic and delicious natural sugars available, as well as natural zero calorie sweeteners. You’ll read a wide variety of opinions on this subject. People will claim that natural sugars and sweeteners are just as bad, contain as many or more calories, and that they can be harmful. It’s not true. Natural sugars are low glycemic, which means that they don’t cause a large spike in blood sugar levels because the nutrition is still present and the body recognizes it as food, so it does not waste resources to flush it out. Raw organic honey, agave nectar, black strap molasses, grade B maple syrup, unrefined “raw” sugar, turbinado, coconut sugar, and even unrefined brown sugar are all low glycemic (some better than others). Honey can be dangerous for infants, but it’s considered safe for older children and adults.
Natural zero calorie sweeteners include pure stevia extract (preferably green stevia if you can find it) and xylitol. Questions have arisen regarding both sweeteners and there are less natural versions of both that are much less healthy in my opinion. There are at least a hundred varieties of stevia, but pure extract of stevia rebaudiana is considered the safest and most delicious. It has been used as a zero calorie sweetener in Japan since the 1960’s without any reported health problems, and has been used in various parts of the world by native cultures for literally thousands of years. Pure stevia extract usually comes in a small bottle that is labeled as containing several hundred servings, which looks impossible until you learn that it is one hundred times sweeter than sugar. If the container states that it measures like sugar, it is not pure stevia extract, but contains other substances as fillers. Truvia® and other processed brands are not pure, natural stevia, but are factory synthesized and contain other substances like erythritol (a type of synthesized alcohol that was shown in preliminary studies to damage the liver). Xylitol is a type of sweet alcohol extracted originally from birch trees. It has been considered suspect by many because it has the alcohol designation, but it is hard to find a study that conclusively shows harm to humans. The safest, most natural form of xylitol appears to be birch xylitol from the U.S.A., not laboratory synthesized xylitol or imported xylitol. The granulated form of xylitol measures, bakes, and tastes like sugar. The powdered form functions like powdered sugar.
If you have diabetes or a risk of diabetes, or if a zero calorie sweetener feels like what you need, natural stevia and/or xylitol may be right for you. Avoid laboratory synthesized sweeteners. This also goes for saccharin, sucralose (an extract from sugar that is chemically modified and contains chlorine), and others. You may be surprised to learn that one of the biggest challenges is finding chewing gum that does not contain aspartame or refined sugar, or often both. You can either avoid chewing gum or search for one of the new types of gum available with only stevia or xylitol as the sweetener or sweetened with unrefined cane sugar. One word of warning: when you detoxify from aspartame, you may experience heavy withdrawal symptoms, including headaches and severe temper. Back to Days List
Day 9: Start reading food and personal care product labels and stop buying anything with artificial ingredients or anything you can’t pronounce. They are usually toxic chemicals, and most are fat soluble toxins, which means that the only way your body can protect itself from them is to wrap them in fat and store them. Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is an excitotoxin. Parabens (contained in many skin care products and deodorants) have been found in more than 90% of breast cancer cells biopsied in a recent study. This may mean shopping for a natural shampoo or learning to make your own. It may mean that you start using natural sunscreen or make your own. When the unnatural sunscreen you buy is more likely to cause skin cancer or breast cancer than the sun itself, there’s something wrong.
And think about this: if we needed sunscreen as bad as they claim we do, mankind would have died out long before recorded history began, let alone in the thousands of years of recorded history before sunscreen was invented. Clear zinc sunscreens are available. Organic coconut oil has an SPF of 5 to 10. Natives used the dust of aspen and birch trees as sunscreen with an SPF of 5 to 15. Castile soap and other natural soaps are available instead of chemical soaps. You can make your own deodorant by using a fresh lime slice or you can mix coconut oil, baking soda, arrowroot powder, and bentonite clay together for deodorant. You can buy ozonated olive oil infused with cinnamon that not only deodorizes, but heals skin. There are other options available that don’t contain harmful chemicals. Back to Days List
Day 10: Switch to healthy drinks instead of sodas, sports drinks, coffee, black tea, and energy drinks. This is another sore subject for many people, because it’s an addiction. These drinks each contain dangerous ingredients. They all cause the body to become more acidic and strip away precious resources. Caffeine is a stimulant that overtaxes the adrenal glands and other body systems. Tannic acid is dangerous to detoxifying organs like the kidneys. There are natural alternatives like fresh juices, green tea, herbal teas (more properly called “tisane” in Europe), the natural lemonade described above, unsweetened coconut water (which contains the same electrolytes as healthy human blood), fruit infused water, clean water, and coffee-like drinks like Pero, Cafix, and others.
An excellent and delicious drink is Mike Finley’s Ginger Bliss: Put a peeled ginger thumb, the juice of two fresh squeezed lemons, 2/3 cup organic agave nectar, a sprinkle of cinnamon, a pinch of cayenne pepper, and enough clean water and ice to make 48 ounces into a good blender and blend until everything is liquefied. Then drink it. It’s delicious and full of good nutrition your body needs. It provides an energy boost. Take natural B vitamin complex to improve your energy. The other detoxification steps you’re already taking will help improve your energy. The next step is also a big key. Back to Days List
Day 11: Start getting enough sleep. Your body’s main detoxification time is during your sleep. If you’re not getting enough sleep, your body is not detoxifying adequately. Then if you take stimulants on top of it, you’re really pushing your body’s limits. Congratulations that you are tough enough to have endured this long. Now go get some sleep. Most people need 6 to 8 hours of sleep every night and possibly a short nap during the day. Back to Days List
Day 12: Start taking 15 to 20 minute “sun breaks” daily. I’m not suggesting that you lay out for hours and get a sunburn. I’m suggesting that you get outside and stand or walk in the sunlight for about 15 to 20 minutes. This provides the essential Vitamin D, which your body creates when part of your skin and your eyes are exposed to sunlight for a few minutes. Take off your sunglasses. Roll up your sleeves. Take a Sun break. Walk a short distance outdoors on a break from work. You deserve it. Back to Days List
Day 13: Begin oil pulling to remove toxins each morning. Oil pulling is a technique in which your favorite healthy oil is swished around in your mouth and pushed and pulled between your teeth for several minutes, which actually pulls toxins out of your bloodstream through your gums. Shoot for 15 to 20 minutes, but if you can’t last that long, keep it up for as long as you can. After you’re done, spit the oil out to expel the toxins from your body. If you suspect that you’ve been exposed to radiation, add some baking soda to the oil for your oil pulling, in a 50-50 ratio, and take baths with unrefined salts in them. Back to Days List
Day 14: Begin a habit of drinking at least one green smoothie per day. There are a lot of recipes out there. I recommend that any green smoothie contain at least the following ingredients: cilantro (removes heavy metals), parsley (detoxifies), celery (helps rebuild neural synapses), a high mineral green like kale (or spinach or turnip greens or arugula or chard, etc.), and fresh squeezed citrus juice (like lemon or lime). You’ll need to add clean water to your blender unless you’re adding something juicy like cucumber or tomatoes or tomatillos. Other good foods to include are your favorite unrefined salt, hemp seeds or oil, olive oil, chia seeds, cayenne pepper, garlic, oregano, basil, turmeric, ginger, peppers, or any other favorite vegetable. Have fun with it. Try different things and see what you like best. Every time you make a fresh green smoothie in your favorite blender and drink it, you detoxify your body and help balance your pH. Back to Days List
Day 15: If you’re still buying prepared or processed foods, use an app to avoid GMO’s. My favorite app for this purpose is BuyCott. It’s free. GMO’s are not labeled in the United States because the FDA head is a former Monsanto executive and because Monsanto and other large biotech companies contribute extensively to political campaigns. However, with this app, you can scan a product’s barcode with your smart phone and be informed immediately whether the company is known to use GMO’s, has contributed to campaigns against GMO labeling (a pretty strong indication), has “no campaign conflicts” (meaning that they are not known to use GMO’s or to campaign against GMO labeling), or “you are supporting this company” (which means that they stand pretty clearly on the side of GMO-free foods). Back to Days List
Day 16: Switch to natural cleaning products in your home. Instead of using cleaning products filled with harsh chemicals, start using white vinegar as your main cleaner, which can disinfect, degrease, and clean mirrors and windows. If you don’t like the smell, you can tone it down a little by putting the peels from your oranges, lemons, and limes into the container. After a few weeks, the vinegar will have a citrus edge to it. When you clean your house, bathroom, stove, or windows, you’ll be using a product that is literally safe as food. There will be a strong smell temporarily, but it usually goes away in a few hours. Opening some windows and letting in some fresh air also helps. You can also find recipes online for other natural cleaning products using essential oils and other natural ingredients. There are natural laundry detergent recipes and natural dishwasher detergent recipes. Check it out. Back to Days List
Day 17: Switch to using live houseplants, good air filters, and essential oils instead of chemical air fresheners. Many air fresheners and germ killers contain a high concentration of toxic chemicals, often carcinogenic. Nothing freshens the air like… fresh air. Changing the air filter on your heating and/or air conditioning unit will help improve the way your residence smells. Opening windows to let in fresh air (unless you live in an area with dangerous air quality) can let out stagnant, germ-filled air and replace it with oxygen rich fresh air.
Many live houseplants help clean the air and provide pleasant aromas. Try learning about essential oils. These are oils extracted and concentrated from plants and flowers. A single drop of essential oil on some wood shavings or potpourri can provide a pleasant aroma in the room for several days. Try to get a chance to smell some essential oils and determine which ones you like best. You might even make your own blend that could be used to freshen your residence your way. Back to Days List
Day 18: Learn to listen to your body’s communications instead of suppressing them with unnecessary drugs. When you have an ache, pain, sniffle, nausea, fever, or other “symptom,” it is a communication from your body. It might be trying to say that it is not getting enough of something, too much of something else, or both. If you have been following all of the steps so far, you may find that some of your usual “symptoms” have been toned down a bit or disappeared. However, if you still have symptoms and you cannot figure out why, you may need some natural guidance from a Certified Natural Health Professional (C.N.H.P.), a Naturopathic Doctor (N.D.), a wholistic nutritionist, or other natural health coach to help you determine what your body is trying to communicate.
Taking over the counter or even prescribed drugs that you don’t need can be a primary cause of toxicity in the body. It is important here to note that American law prohibits that anyone advise you to disregard your medical doctor’s advice and that is not my intent. Also, nothing in this article is intended to diagnose or prevent any specific disease. You may be taking medications that you actually need to be taking and I am not instructing any individual to stop taking any specific prescription medication. I am encouraging you to consult with your doctor and natural health professionals and make your own determination as to whether or not some of your medications are unnecessary. I am also encouraging you to reevaluate the over-the-counter “medicines” that you take, many of which are so toxic that they have lethal doses starting at only three to four times the recommended dosage. Back to Days List
Day 19: If you eat cooked foods, make more of them baked, roasted, or sautéed and less of them batter fried or deep fried. I enjoy the taste of fried chicken as much as anyone. I also used to eat a lot of French fries. However, the more I have detoxified my body, the less my body wants those foods, and for good reason. One of my favorite healthy breakfasts involves putting coconut oil in a skillet, then putting in fresh sliced red onions and two eggs, sprinkled with my homemade Creole seasoning and/or Himalayan pink salt. I cook the eggs over easy because runny yolks are one of the best know sources of lecithin, which provides many health benefits, including helping the body to break down and assimilate fats. It is delicious and does not bog down my body or brain like deep fried foods. Back to Days List
Day 20: Switch to healthier carbs and starches. Use red or other colored potatoes instead of white potatoes. Use rice instead of wheat. Use brown rice instead of white (although some rice has been treated with toxic chemicals, so you need to be careful). Buy baked multi-grain chips instead of potato chips or fried corn chips. Use multi-grain flour instead of bleached white flour or enriched flour. Learn to make your own multi-grain flour with your favorite grains and seeds in your coffee grinder, quality blender, or wheat grinder. Many wheat breads will actually contain a lot of refined white flour with just a little whole wheat grain added for look, texture, and flavor.
The body uses these refined carbs and heavy starches almost exactly like refined white sugar. Remember that if you are getting adequate healthy fats, your body is less likely to crave these unhealthy carbs, so if you’re still craving them, put a little more olive oil or your other favorite oils in your diet. I like to make herbed red potato “fries” or “chips” in the oven by cutting them into slices that look either like discs or like French fries. Then I put olive oil on a large baking tray, sprinkle some homemade Creole seasoning (or garlic powder and Himalayan pink salt and possibly a little chili powder) and dill and rosemary over it, lay down the “fries” or “chips” on the tray, brush some more olive oil over the top, then sprinkle the same seasonings over them. I put them in the oven at about 375 for about 30 minutes and they are very delicious; better than any French fries I’ve tried.
There are many brands of bread now available that are both gluten free and delicious, made from such clever things as coconut or sprouted grains. It is becoming easier every day to find healthier carbs. Even then, carbs are less likely to be fattening if they are consumed in the morning or at lunchtime and not at or after dinner. Also, if you are not convinced that processed wheat products are harmful, try reading Wheat Belly or Wheat Brain and see what you think after those experts have shared their knowledge and research. Back to Days List
Day 21: If you eat meat, switch to meats that don’t contain nitrites or nitrates. Sodium nitrite and sodium nitrate are used in many processed meats like bacon, sausage, lunch meat, ham, beef jerky, and canned meats. However, many manufacturers are becoming very sensitive to consumer demands for healthier foods and are now preparing their meats with no nitrites and nitrates. Read the labels and find out, then support to the healthy manufacturers and make the less healthy manufacturers lose your business.
You will see the same debates about nitrites and nitrates as you will about other chemical additives: the manufacturers and their government cronies claim that they are safe, but a growing number of independent studies have linked them to cancer. They are carcinogenic. They are a type of toxin, but the manufacturers’ argument is that they are mildly toxic and will not kill you right away in the levels contained in their foods. However, if you have gotten this far with this program, you are serious about detoxifying your body and this is a big one. Back to Days List
Day 22: Learn how to digest your food better with better chewing, better food selection, and digestive support. This step was placed later on the list not because it is unimportant, but because it does not have as much to do with detoxification as the assimilation of the nutrients your body needs to detoxify, though poor digestion can also lead people to take drugs that add more toxins to the system. Your body’s chemistry begins in your stomach, just like the functioning of your car starts with what goes in the gas tank. If the chemistry doesn’t function properly in the stomach, it will result in problems throughout the body, from the internal organs and intestines all the way out to your skin.
Let me be clear about something: there is no such thing as acid indigestion. Acid dissolves food. If you have too much acid, your food would dissolve faster, not be left undigested. The primary digestion of the food (breaking it down for assimilation) is supposed to be done by enzymes, which are present in natural, non-GMO foods if they have not been cooked past about 104 to 107 degrees Fahrenheit.
Therefore, what people think is acid indigestion is usually caused by poor food selection (such as deep fried or greasy foods made with hydrogenated oils or other unhealthy oils), unavailability of necessary enzymes for digestion, or poor combinations of food (for example, a fat- even a healthy fat- coating a simple carbohydrate like bread or pasta creates an indigestible combination). Cutting back on fried and greasy foods will help. Taking plant source digestive enzymes will help. Reducing stress in life will help, because stress causes the digestive functions to shut down. If you are still having trouble with fats or oils that are healthy, taking some lecithin supplements or eating a food that is rich in lecithin (such as runny egg yolks or yellow dandelion blossoms- yes, dandelion blossoms) may help, because lecithin emulsifies fats and makes them digestible. Back to Days List
Day 23A: Evaluate and reduce or eliminate toxic relationships and stressful situations from your life. Stress causes the body to go into fight or flight syndrome, release adrenalin into the muscles, and shuts down anything that the body does not need to run away from danger or fight against a threat. Your mind might know that your relationship or stressful situations are not an immediate life-or-death threat, but your body doesn’t. Therefore, unnecessary stress at work, home, with relatives, neighbors, or even worrying or dwelling angrily or begrudgingly on past offenses can cause your internal organs to be shut down and not do their job to detoxify your system, digest your food, prevent infections, and keep you healthy.
People say that something is “eating away at them” and they may be more correct than they know. Learn to handle situations better. Learn to let go of offenses. Learn to look on the bright side. Learn to realize that your worrying over something is not making the situation better and may be preventing you from thinking clearly to get through it. Learn that toxic shame only brings you down and does not help to resolve past offenses committed by you or against you, and replace it with an appropriate acceptance of responsibility for your own actions and feelings. Learn to be kind to your fellow man. Give appropriate and sincere complements. If real, immediate dangers arise, your fight-or-flight syndrome will still be available to help you get through it and your body will be better able to respond because you won’t be worn out. Back to Days List
Day 23B: Learn to trust your creator. It doesn’t matter for our purposes here whether or not you believe in God. Something bigger than you created you, even if you believe that was evolution or quantum physics. Trust that whatever or whoever created you produced a “you” that was designed to survive and thrive. You are not a mistake. You have purpose, talents, intelligence and abilities. You don’t have to be Albert Einstein or Michael Jordan to have value.
You may be wondering what this step has to do with detoxification. It is part of eliminating toxic thoughts. It helps prevent depression and discouragement. Hope can be very cleansing and uplifting emotionally. It will also help to guide your choices to focus on the natural, less-toxic food, housing, environmental, water, medicinal, and relationship options in which your creator designed you to survive. You can and will be healthier and avoid unnatural, toxic choices when you trust your creator. Back to Days List
Day 24: Reduce your uses of and exposure to petroleum plastics and products. There are such things as natural plastics made from natural substances like hemp, but they can be tricky to find. Our homes are filled with petroleum products. To list a few here is reasonable, but it might require an entire book to list them all:
petroleum jelly, lip balms and lip sticks made with petroleum, paraffin wax, nylon or polyester or other synthetic fabrics, many types of carpeting, many types of varnishes and wood stains, plastic baggies, plastic bottles, plastic drinking glasses, plastic wrap, plastic toothbrushes (almost impossible to find a non-plastic option there), nylon-based dental floss, Styrofoam, polyethylene, the manufactured foam in your couch and bed and pillow, many brands of ointments from antibacterial ointments to hemorrhoid creams that contain petroleum jelly or petrolatum, almost the entire interior of your car, many of the ingredients in your skin and hair care products, plastic-coated non-stick cookware, etc.
There are so many of these products that you will not be able to complete this step fully in one day and may never be able to fully complete it, but you can get started. I wrote most of this article on a plastic keyboard and started it on a smartphone that is largely plastic on the outside. You don’t have to discard your entire wardrobe and tear up your carpeting or burn down your house. But when things wear out, try replacing them with a non-petroleum option.
Buy more clothing made from natural fibers. Buy hair and skin brushes with natural fiber bristles. Roll down your vehicle’s windows and let the fresh air push out the heated plastic fumes before you fully get into it. Try using a natural healing cream like 50-50 raw honey and coconut oil for healing instead of a petroleum based antibacterial cream or hemorrhoidal cream. Try using a natural lip balm made from beeswax or olive oil (or making your own). Try using coconut oil directly on your lips and hands to help soften and hydrate them. Try to use transportation that pollutes as little as possible or uses alternative, non-petroleum fuels. This is a long-term project and the more people that do this, the better our air and personal environment will become. Back to Days List
Day 25: Start consuming healthy, delicious homemade chocolate. Chocolate is a superfood, one of the most nutrient-dense foods on the planet. (Not that store-bought candy bar- REAL chocolate). Manufactured candy is allowed by federal law to contain as much as 40% paraffin wax (remember- this is a petroleum product) by volume without being required to list it on the ingredients. That’s right, the federal government has specifically authorized your favorite candy makers to poison you and your children with modified motor oil without telling you. Store bought candy also tends to contain a very high level of refined sugar and a number of artificial ingredients. However, real, natural chocolate is believed to strengthen the body, improve its functions, and even help prevent cancer. So, make your own. It is ridiculously simple.
First, you’ll need some type of a mold in which to form the candy, and yes, plastic molds may be the most available option. Next, unless you’re making natural peanut butter cups with mini-cupcake papers (which we’ll discuss shortly), you’ll need to grease the molds with coconut oil so that the chocolate can be extracted from the mold more easily when it’s finished. You’ll need a good, natural chocolate/cocoa/cacao powder, and the more raw it is the more healthy it will be. The basic recipe is one part cocoa powder, 1/2 part coconut oil, and 1/3 part honey or agave nectar (or powdered xylitol if you’re diabetic- stevia is a bit tricky to work with here). You can increase the sweetener percentage up to 1/2 part if you like it sweeter. So, if you’re using cups, that would be 1 cup cocoa powder, 1/2 cup coconut oil, and 1/3 cup honey or other sweetener. You don’t need to cook it if you just make sure that the coconut oil is warm enough to be liquid. You may need to put your measuring pitcher into a bowl of warm water to keep the coconut oil liquid in cool weather. Stir the ingredients together with a fork or wire whisk until it’s smooth and you’re ready to pour it into the molds. Have some fun and be creative. Press some of your favorite nuts or fruits or both into it. Sprinkle in some unsweetened shredded coconut if you like.
For peanut butter cups, line a mini-cupcake tray with mini-cupcake papers and pour in a thin layer of chocolate, followed by a layer of natural peanut butter or almond butter, followed by another layer of chocolate. However you decided to make this batch, put it in the freezer or refrigerator for at least half an hour and it will harden. Pop it out of the molds and eat some. Put the rest into the refrigerator until you’re ready to eat it, because there is no paraffin wax in this chocolate, so it will melt quickly. That’s because it’s real chocolate. You will have a hard time eating too much of this chocolate because your body will signal you that it received adequate nutrition. You can actually lose weight while eating this chocolate, because natural homemade dark chocolate helps to burn stomach fat and the natural oils help to wash away unhealthy fats. Back to Days List
Day 26: Reduce your exposure to aluminum in your cookware and antiperspirant. Aluminum is toxic. If you use antiperspirant, you are placing aluminum oxide on your skin, which clogs the pores and some of it may be absorbed into your body. If you use aluminum cookware and aluminum foil, there is some level of aluminum getting into your system. Reducing the amount of aluminum that contacts your skin and your food is a good idea. Again, you may not be able to eliminate it completely, but the more you can reduce the use of this toxic metal, the better off you will be. Back to Days List
Day 27: Reduce your exposure to mercury, including thimerosal (medical mercury). Mercury has been recognized as a toxic heavy metal for many decades, but still remains present in our society mostly in the following forms: amalgam dental fillings (you can opt for porcelain fillings), as thimerosal preservative in vaccines (you can opt to not take vaccines and develop natural immunities), in fluorescent lighting that bursts into the environment if the fluorescent light breaks (you can opt for safer lighting like L.E.D.’s now that the government has essentially banned regular incandescent light bulbs), and in thermometers (usually contained in glass and not a problem unless the thermometer breaks). Remember that frequent consumption of cilantro helps to remove toxic metals like mercury, lead, and aluminum from your system, as does oil pulling. Back to Days List
Day 28: Switch to using natural pest killers or pest repellents. DEET is a very toxic chemical found in many mosquito repellents. Most pest killers are very literally poisonous and that is why they kill pests and bear warning labels requiring the use of skin, eye, and respiration protection. They are unquestionably toxic, even to humans. Learn to use essential oils like lavender, citronella, eucalyptus, and neem oil to drive away or kill pests, or purchase products that use these natural substances instead of harmful chemicals. Learn to use food grade diatomaceous earth to kill pests. If it is food grade, it is so safe that people sometimes swallow some of it to eliminate parasites in the human body. It works because it has microscopic sharp edges that cut open an insect’s shell and exposes it to dehydration. Ants can track it into their colony and wipe out the colony. In other words, there are very effective and natural alternatives to using toxic chemicals for insect repellent or insect extermination. Back to Days List
Day 29: Use probiotic products and rBST-free or raw dairy products if you consume dairy. Probiotics are cultures of the good bacteria and yeasts that the body needs to function properly and process foods in the gut. Chances are that you have lost a lot of these probiotic cultures from eating foods with chemical ingredients, taking antibiotics, and eating meats that have been grown with antibiotics. You can buy kefir, yogurt with active probiotic cultures, probiotic kombucha tea, probiotic supplements, or learn to make your own milk or water kefir, kombucha, yogurt, etc. If you consume dairy products, those with active probiotic cultures will be easier to digest and the probiotics will help your body to detoxify and function at a healthier level.
You should also avoid dairy products that contain rBST, which has been connected in many studies with cancer and other health problems, and many dairy products are specifically labeled “rBST free.” Raw dairy products are hard to get in the United States, which requires pasteurization, which denatures the enzymes in the milk, making it difficult or impossible to fully digest and assimilate. However, raw dairy products still contain the natural enzymes that make the milk more useful and digestible. If your dietary choices are based upon the bible (and some people’s are), there are multiple references in the bible to the use of dairy products, especially butter, as food. Back to Days List
Day 30: If you eat meat, switch to naturally fed, free range meats instead of hormone-infused, genetically modified, antibiotic-filled, inhumanely raised meats. Cows were designed to feed on grass, not corn, so grass fed beef is going to be healthier than corn-fed beef. Chickens and pigs were designed to walk around and feed on a variety of foods, not be cramped into inhumane living quarters and kept in the dark. Animals that are raised in an inhumane manner require large amounts of antibiotics to keep them alive. It has been revealed in several reports that roughly 70% of the antibiotics produced in the United States are used on farm animals instead of people. This contributes to the rapid development of antibiotic-tolerant “super germs.”
Many animals are now genetically engineered to be bigger, contain more meat, etc. Many animals are injected with hormones for rapid growth or to survive unhealthy conditions, and those hormones remain in the meat that is sold as food for humans. For those who eat meat, the more natural your meat is, the fewer chemicals, medicines, and toxins you will consume. Wild meat is often the healthiest unless the wild animal has been feeding on chemical-laced crops. Back to Days List
With a firm commitment, in as little as 30 days you can eliminate most of the toxins from your life and allow your body to detoxify and heal, resulting in an increased intelligence and ability to survive and thrive. There are more things that can be done to detoxify. You may also want to consult with a natural health professional to target your specific nutritional and detoxification needs. Remember, if you are under medical care, you should consult with your physician before you make any changes to your medications or diet.
